In short: The municipality of Utrecht and other authorities aim to achieve the seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. Active participation from both affluent and less privileged residents is essential for this endeavor. Under the initiative of Duurzaam Utrecht 2030, individuals with limited financial resources are consulted about their preferences for sustainable living. The aim is to engage politicians, government officials, educational institutions, social partners, and citizens in collaborative efforts to identify viable solutions that align with these aspirations. This report specifically delves into the activities carried out in the fall of 2023 under the Duurzaam Utrecht 2030 initiative.
The Organic Subsidized Groceries project in Lunetten, spanning from June to November 2023, aimed to provide affordable access to organic groceries. Led by Ineke Malsch and Elizabete Fedčenko, the project distributed vouchers allowing residents to redeem them at Ekovers and Koppelsteede.
The project demonstrated high participant engagement, distributing vouchers on specific dates at the local community center, Limoenz. Feedback and interviews revealed significant interest in sustainable living, with an emphasis on the quality and health benefits of organic produce. However, key challenges surfaced, primarily centered around price, accessibility, atmosphere, and the need for education and transparency.
