Upon arriving at the Community Center Sterrenzicht in Utrecht East on a Monday evening, I observed BuurtBuik in action. This initiative prepares healthy, free meals using rescued food from local suppliers such as Hira, Persepolis, and the Food Bank. Volunteers collect the surplus food and cook it together to create a three-course meal.
Buurtbuik operates weekly on Mondays from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM at Community Center Sterrenzicht. The atmosphere was welcoming and inclusive, with individuals of all ages and backgrounds participating. The process involved using donated food items and creatively crafting meals from the available ingredients. Despite the unpredictable nature of the donations, the volunteers approached the task with enthusiasm and teamwork. By bringing people together over a meal, Buurtbuik addresses issues of food waste, loneliness, and poverty.
Additionally, I noted that any extra food remaining at the end of the dinner was distributed among the attendees to prevent food waste. Buurtbuik’s model of utilizing rescued food to create meals for the community demonstrates a practical and impactful approach to addressing social and environmental challenges.
They operate at multiple locations across the Netherlands, including Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and Utrecht. Available on BuurtBuik’s website.
